The Boys Varsity Soccer Team rebounded from their loss in their exhibition game and from a poor first half showing last night to defeat the Sequoyah Chiefs 3-1. A lackluster first half saw the Gladiators trailing 1-0 as a result of a penalty. Sophomore goalkeeper and captain Ben Gonzalez would help keep the Chiefs from getting a second goal in the first half with a smart save moving from right to left to deny a clear chance by Sequoyah.
The second half saw a re-energized Johns Creek team that poured on the pressure from the second half kickoff. Almost immediately JCHS would level the score at 1-1 when senior Zach Wyborn broke through the Chiefs back line and slotted one home. Just a couple of minutes later senior captain Matt Wozniak would slam home a header on a nice free kick delivery from freshman Kameron Gorst to give the Gladiators their first lead of the game at 2-1. The flurry would continue as Johns Creek got a third goal to put the match away when Zach Wyborn scored his second of the night after sophomore Justin Kawakami was initially denied by a great sliding block by a Chiefs defender, but Kawakami would stick with the play and lay the ball off to Wyborn who blasted it past the scrambling goalkeeper.
The win gets Johns Creek off to a winning start in the regular season and they will take on West Forsyth at home on Friday night at 8:00.
