On Friday night the Johns Creek Boys rode an early goal to victory in their annual early season match-up with West Forsyth High School. The Gladiators looked much sharper in the first half than they did on Tuesday and it paid off early, as senior forward Zach Wyborn broke through the Wolverine back line and slotted one home through the wickets of the West Forsyth goalkeeper. Johns Creek kept up the high work rate and intensity throughout the rest of the first half and went in leading 1-0.
The second half saw a similar work rate and the Gladiators put West under serious pressure to start the second frame and should have had their second goal of the night when the last Wolverines defender pulled down Wyborn, who was through on goal, in what appeared to be a red card worthy offense. However the West defender escaped with only a yellow and Johns Creek was denied their second goal of the night. As the half wore on West Forsyth pressed forward more and more and just as he had done all throughout the first half as well, sophomore Ben Gonzalez was there to fist out every free kick and corner that was pumped into his box. Gonzalez would preserve the lead with an outstanding save going from one post to another on a cross and denying what looked like a certain tying goal for the Wolverines. The rest of the work to hold onto the win was done by a very determined Johns Creek team, who got valuable minutes and effort late in the second half from everyone on their roster to hold back West Forsyth.
The boys return to the field Friday when they travel to North Gwinnett High School at 8:00pm.
