In an intense matchup between two of the best teams in the state, the Johns Creek Gladiators faced off against the top ranked Gainesville Red Elephants, with both teams showcasing their prowess on the court. Gainesville entered the game with an impressive undefeated record of 17-0, while the Gladiators boasted a solid 15-2 record. Both teams were 4-0 in region play at the tip off, as a packed crowd gathered for an epic night of high school basketball.
The standout performer for Johns Creek was senior Tatum Holmes, who scored an impressive 33 points, surpassing the 1,000-point milestone for his career. His exceptional performance in the fourth quarter, where he scored 15 points, sparked a fierce comeback attempt for the Gladiators. However, despite his efforts, the team fell short against Gainesville's dynamic duo of Belmont commit Charlie Gersmehl and point guard KJ White, who combined for 31 points. Charlie Gersmehl made some tough shots against a tenacious defense of Jack Reinhardt of the Gladiators.
Ben Uhde also contributed to Johns Creek's effort with 14 points as the game remained closely contested. The momentum swung back and forth until Gainesville established a 10-point lead late in the game. The 4th quarter was highly entertaining with both teams battling it out one possession at a time making big shot after big shot. With only two seconds remaining, Johns Creek had one final opportunity to tie the game, but their shot missed, leaving the Red Elephants victorious.
This thrilling encounter promises to set the stage for an exciting rematch in February, where both teams will look to prove themselves once again on the court.
