Male Athlete of the Month - Drew King - Baseball

Gladiator Athletics is proud to recognize Drew King, a sophomore standout on the varsity baseball team, as our February Athlete of the Month. Though only in his second year of high school, Drew has already established himself as a cornerstone of the program—an athlete whose maturity, work ethic, and leadership reflect far more experience than his grade level might suggest.

Drew’s athletic versatility is one o the greatest assets to the Johns Creek baseball program. Whether he’s stepping in at shortstop, catcher, pitcher, or any position the team needs, Drew consistently answers the call. His willingness to contribute to whatever role best serves the team speaks volumes about his character and commitment.

But beyond the fielding and pitching charts, Drew brings something even more valuable to the dugout—an unwavering positive spirit. He is known for the smile he brings with him to every practice and game, setting the tone for his teammates and coaches alike.

Head Coach Jim Ernst highlights Drew’s rare blend of discipline, leadership, and maturity:

"Although only a sophomore, Drew demonstrates the maturity, discipline, and presence on the baseball field that are typically seen in seasoned seniors. He approaches every practice and every game with a positive attitude, regardless of the circumstances. When mistakes happen, he never deflects or makes excuses; instead, he takes ownership and uses challenges as opportunities to learn."

Drew’s leadership is rooted not in speeches, but inconsistent action. From taking responsibility to pushing himself in every drill, he sets a standard that elevates everyone around him.

Coach Ernst also notes Drew’s extraordinary dedication to preparation:

"He frequently arrives with new drills or ideas to strengthen our defensive play. He even travels to other teams’ games to scout opponents and study their tendencies. His commitment reflects both passion and an exceptional work ethic."

Drew’s impact reaches far beyond the diamond. As part of the SALT leadership team, he played an instrumental role inorganizing the December used sports equipment drive.

SALT leader Regina Tate‑Leslie shared:

"Drew is an exceptional young man. He is full of integrity and character. He handled most of the equipment‑drive responsibilities off campus, which required significant planning and initiative. I am very pleased with his leadership."

His leadership isn’t loud or showy, it's consistent, reliable, and deeply rooted in service to others.

In the classroom, Drew’s teachers echo the same themes seen on the field: drive, humility, and leadership.

Chemistry teacher Leanna Vaughn describes Drew as:

"A very hard worker who always wants to make sure he understands the material. He takes charge during labs, is incredibly respectful, and always communicate responsibly when he’s going to miss class. He is kind to his peers and teachers alike."

ELA teacher Chloe Grimes adds:

"Drew is self‑motivated and a leader among his peers. He works hard each day in the classroom just as he does on the baseball field."

Social studies teacher Bill Waters summarizes the sentiment perfectly:

"Drew displays the positive character and necessary commitment on the playing field and in the classroom to succeed."

One of Drew’s most admirable traits is the pride he takes in being part of the broader Johns Creek athletic community. He frequently shows up at other teams’ games—not for recognition, but to support classmates and capture photos of fellow athletes in action. His enthusiasm strengthens not only the baseball program, but the entire school spirit.

Drew King embodies everything we hope to see in a Johns Creek athlete: talent, humility, leadership, positivity, and a genuine love for the game—and for his school. His impact reaches teammates, coaches, teachers, and peers, making him a deserving recipient of our February Athlete of the Month honor.

Congratulations, Drew! Johns Creek High School is proud of the athlete—and the person—you are becoming.
